In our recent news, we updated you that the Government was exploring the possibility of extending the oil heating boiler ban, which was planned for 2026, and working with the heating oil industry to find a way of introducing a replacement for the fossil fuel used for home heating.
We’re pleased to let you know that the Government has recently announced their commitment to reviewing how the 1.7m oil heated homes in the country can switch to using renewable liquid fuel. This decision comes after an amendment was passed in the Energy Bill, which acknowledges the need for affordable and minimally disruptive options to decarbonise rural communities.
Although there is much work still to do, the provision of a drop-in replacement renewable liquid fuel, such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), provides a clear pathway to achieving decarbonisation quickly.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced changes to the Net Zero policy, which will make heating homes fairer and more affordable.
Here are some key points from his speech:
- The oil boiler ban has been pushed back from 2026 to 2035.
- Homeowners will not be forced to replace their existing oil boiler with a heat pump.
- Homes that cannot accommodate a heat pump will be exempt.
- The boiler upgrade scheme will now offer up to £7,500 for those who want to switch to a heat pump earlier.
