Kettlewell Fuels Future Ready Fuels

A renewable fuel for your boiler

The liquid fuel heating industry is currently trialling HVO as a replacement for kerosene heating oil

Looking for a greener way to heat your home?

For over 50 years, heating oil has been a popular choice for homes off the gas grid.

To tackle climate change and achieve the UK's net zero target, we need to switch from fossil fuels to renewable heating.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) works just like heating oil but is much better for the environment.

For households living off the gas grid, the good news is that you don’t need to buy an expensive new heating system to significantly reduce your household emissions. You can achieve this by simply changing the type of fuel you use. HVO works well in all existing oil heating systems following a simple, cost-effective conversion process.

The liquid fuel heating industry is currently trialling HVO as a replacement for kerosene heating oil.

The Future Ready Fuel demonstration project, which involves 150 off the gas grid oil heated properties across the UK, has shown that switching from kerosene to HVO can reduce carbon emissions by up to 88%. The conversion process is easy and can be done when your boiler is serviced or upgraded, typically costing around £500.

Additionally, HVO is made from certified sustainable waste materials and runs just as efficiently as heating oil in existing heating oil systems. UKIFDA and OFTEC believe that this project is the perfect blueprint for more rural communities to adopt as part of a wider rollout.

Plans for the phase-out of fuel oil boilers now moved from 2026 to 2035.

What happens next?

As part of the Heat and Building Strategy and off-grid consultation, the UK government has made proposals to delay the date for the ban of the installation of new fossil fuel oil boilers from 2026 to 2035. Furthermore, the government announced it will never force anyone to rip out their existing boiler and install a heat pump – welcome news for the many oil users throughout the UK.

Whilst supporting this move, looking to the future, the industry believes that renewable liquid fuels, such as HVO, provide a less disruptive and more cost-effective alternative than heat pumps.  Moreover, they offer households a choice in how they choose to decarbonise their homes.
