Changes to red diesel taxation
As of 1st April 2022, new strict regulations were implemented by the UK Government regarding the use of red diesel. These regulations have limited the availability of rebated fuels to various businesses and sectors.
We are here to provide assistance and guidance on how these changes will impact you and your business:
There isn’t a license requirement for buying red diesel fuel, but it’s important to make sure that you confirm with the fuel company you are purchasing it from that you intend to use red diesel legitimately.
You’ll need to fill out a Red Diesel RDCO form to confirm this. Be sure only to purchase red diesel, also known as gas oil, from a legitimate source, as any suspicion of illegal use can result in the company reporting your purchase information to HMRC.
Contact our customer service team on 01765 640682 if you require more information or help with the RDCO form.
As of April 1st, 2022, certain industries and companies are no longer permitted to use red diesel due to new regulations. Your choices now include using white diesel, also known as DERV, or exploring other fuel options.
If you are unsure whether your business is eligible for red diesel, you can check the HMRC website or contact us at 01765 640682 for advice and assistance with choosing the most suitable fuel for your needs.

Red diesel is given a significant rebate to relieve financial pressure on important industries like agriculture and horticulture. This type of diesel carries less tax than white diesel and can offer considerable savings to those who can legally purchase and use it.
The VAT rate for red diesel is 5% for quantities up to 2,300 litres. However, for quantities exceeding 2,300 litres, the VAT rate increases to 20%. In contrast, white diesel, which is also referred to as DERV, is always taxed at 20%, regardless of the quantity bought.
If you’re currently using white Derv for heating purposes in commercial boilers, heaters, or dryers, switching to our GO:35 could deliver significant cost savings.
Our drop-in alternative has the same calorific value as red diesel but doesn’t incur excise duty. To learn more or obtain a competitive quote, call us at 01765 640682 and start saving today.
It is against the law to use gas oil on public roads except for agricultural purposes. Red diesel contains a harmless dye that won’t damage your engine, but it is added to help HMRC enforce the law and prevent fraud.
Even if you drain your fuel tank, the dye will still leave a trace. If you suspect illegal use of fuel, contact HMRC right away and follow their guidance.
Red diesel is only permitted for use on the road by certain vehicles that are considered ‘exempted’. To qualify for this exemption, vehicles and machinery must be engaged in agricultural, horticultural, fish farming, or forestry-related activities. This includes vehicles used for tasks such as cutting verges and hedges, clearing snow and gritting roads, and they must be registered as being in agricultural use.
If you’re engaged in agricultural activities, you’re free to travel as far as necessary on red diesel. If you’d like more information, including a complete list of vehicles that are eligible to use rebated fuel, please visit the HMRC website.
