  • Do I need to be at home when you deliver my heating oil?

In most cases, there is no need for you to be at home, as long as our driver can get to your heating oil storage tank.

However, if you need to know when we’re coming, perhaps to unlock your tank or make sure we can access your property, we can let you know the day before we plan to make a domestic heating oil delivery, either by e-mail, by sending you an SMS text message, or we can even give you a quick call. Whatever best suits you.

  • How do I check how much oil I have left?

    Site Gauge

Often heating oil tanks are fitted with a site gauge – a clear plastic tube on the side of your tank, which makes it simple to check your heating oil tank level. These are extremely popular. There’ll be a button and when pressed, the fuel in the tube will settle at the level in the tank. The disadvantage of this type of gauge is that the heating oil can, over time, discolour the plastic tube, making it difficult to read the level.

If you have a digital monitor

Your tank may have a digital monitor that plugs into an electric socket inside your house, such as an Apollo or Watchman. The device will flash when your heating oil is getting low, but ordering when the digit reaches 2 (2 bars) is usually the ideal time.

No gauge and need to check your oil level

If your tank has no gauging system, or you want to double-check the accuracy of your gauge, an alternative basic method to monitor how much oil you have left is to dip the tank with a clean garden cane.

To avoid contamination, make sure you use a designated dipstick that is kept clean and used solely for your oil tank.

The least effective and most unreliable ways to check your heating oil level are shining a torch in or tapping the tank.

  • How do I protect my oil tank from theft?

The location of your oil fired central heating oil tank is very important – locating your tank in a place where it is not easily visible is recommended. Other measures you could consider include:

    Screen your tank

If your domestic heating oil tank is visible, consider planting bushes (must be at least 0.6 metres away from your tank) or constructing a fence around it (at least 0.76 metres away). However, access will be required for maintenance and filling, and this needs to be considered when erecting and screening.

    Tank gauge

If you have a heating oil tank gauge or monitor, it may give a warning via an App on your smartphone if your heating oil is being stolen.

    Security lighting

Lighting may startle any trespassers and discourage intruders, and could alert you to their presence if your domestic heating oil tank is within sight of your home, and/or CCTV can be a good deterrent or even consider a ‘Beware of the dog’ sign.

    Locks

Tank locks can be fitted to the cap of your heating oil tank. These should be high-quality padlocks – round shackle padlocks are recommended because they have a closed shackle that’s difficult to access with bolt cutters.

    Bunded tank

If you do not already have one, consider changing to a bunded tank. Bunded tanks make stealing fuel more complicated as thieves have to penetrate both the outer tank and the inner tank.

  • What size heating oil tank will I need?

If you need a new central heating oil tank, whether to replace your existing tank or for a new installation, it’s important you choose the right size for your home and for your individual circumstances.

There are different domestic heating oil storage tanks available, and you need to consider where it’s going to be located, whether you are space-limited, as well as how much fuel you will use and how often you would prefer to fill your central heating oil tank.

Heating oil tanks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The size of the tank needed will depend on the size of your property, the space available for locating the tank and your heating requirements, for instance, whether you use it for heating, cooking or both. If you are at home most of the time and have your oil central heating on all day, your consumption is likely to be higher than if you are at work all day and the heating is set to come on with a timer before you return home.

The minimum delivery is 500 litres, but being able to store more domestic heating oil may bring the benefit of being able to order more – larger volumes usually attract a lower unit pence per litre price.

Whatever size and type of tank you decide to buy, make sure it complies with OFTEC standards. For advice on what size of tank will suit your requirements, call us on 01765 640682.
