Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) could be the answer. Functioning just like traditional heating oil, HVO is a renewable liquid fuel that significantly reduces a household’s carbon emissions. In fact, UKIFDA, the UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association, along with OFTEC, have launched the Future Ready Fuel campaign, promoting HVO as a realistic alternative to fossil fuels for homes and businesses off the gas grid.
As part of the Heat and Building Strategy and off-grid consultation, the UK government has made proposals to ban the installation of new fossil fuel oil boilers from 2026 and end the use of Kerosene (heating oil) in the late 2030s. Instead, oil heated homes will be expected in most cases to fit heat pumps. The industry believes renewable liquid fuels, such as HVO, offer a less disruptive and more cost effective alternative. And, importantly, provide households with a choice as to how they decide to decarbonise their homes.
Successful demonstration project
In fact, the Future Ready Fuel demonstration project involving 150 oil-heated properties across the UK has shown that switching from kerosene to HVO can reduce carbon emissions by up to 88%. The conversion process is simple and can be done when your boiler is serviced or upgraded, typically costing around £500. Plus, HVO is made from certified sustainable waste materials and runs just as efficiently as heating oil in existing heating oil systems. UKIFDA and OFTEC state that this project is the perfect blueprint for more rural communities to follow as part of a wider rollout. Read more about the demonstration project here.
The Government’s Energy Bill July 2023
In July, Cornish MP, George Eustice, submitted two amendments to the current Energy Bill. These amends, which are supported by many regional MPs, propose the use of Renewable Liquid Heating Fuel (RLHF) for off the gas grid households.
