It is against the law to use gas oil on public roads except for agricultural purposes. Red diesel contains a harmless dye that won’t damage your engine, but it is added to help HMRC enforce the law and prevent fraud.

Even if you drain your fuel tank, the dye will still leave a trace. If you suspect illegal use of fuel, contact HMRC right away and follow their guidance.
